A clear sky framed Wednesday night's three-hour red-hued Lunar Eclipse. A lunar eclipse is caused by the Sun casting the Earth's shadow into the Moon's orbit. The red hue is caused by light being refracted as it passes over the surface the the Earth. Like a prism, light with shorter wavelengths (blue-violet) diffuse at a greater degree than the light with longer wavelenghts (red-yellow).
